As highly successful and experienced business professionals and entrepreneurs, SCORE mentors deliver valuable, timely, and practical advice. Whether you are a start-up or an existing business, our mentors will help you and your business open new markets, reach new customers, and achieve new goals.
These SCORE mentors will help you start and grow your business through free and confidential business advice online and in person.
Santa Barbara SCORE volunteers are retired or semi-retired executives providing a unique spectrum of industry experience and management expertise. The SCORE mentor relationship is designed to provide the entrepreneur with useful and actionable information in the context of a long-term relationship existing for the life of the clients business.
When you register as a Santa Barbara SCORE client you will provide information regarding your business idea, nature of counseling requested and assistance needed. Your initial contact with a SCORE mentor will be for intake counseling at which time the counselor will discuss working with Santa Barbara SCORE and solicit additional information to help select a volunteer to mentor you as the business idea evolves.
After accepting the assignment your SCORE mentor will contact you to set up an initial meeting. During the initial meeting, your mentor will establish a relationship by listening and asking questions to achieve an understanding of your business idea and offering suggestions and experience to help focus on issues that require your mentor’s expertise. SCORE mentors don’t perform the clients work, nor provide all of the answers, but they will help you think through issues logically and methodically so that you can determine the best course of action. The mentor’s goal is to help you, as an entrepreneur, assess and analyze the business idea by uncovering information and discovering answers together. The outcome of the initial meeting will be actionable suggestions and specific goals and objectives for follow-on meetings.
As a result of the initial meeting, you will begin to refine the business idea and identify the need for additional information. SCORE offers several tools for gaining this help in subsequent meetings with your mentor. The first is your assigned mentor who brings a wealth of experience, expertise and desire to help the client develop a successful business. In addition, there are other Santa Barbara SCORE mentors that will co-counsel to offer expertise that supplements that of your assigned mentor. Finally, there is the SCORE website which is an online library providing multiple tools and information that is supportive of the entrepreneur’s questions and needs.
As the business idea evolves your mentor’s goal is to maintain contact and help you be successful by providing the management expertise and tools to evaluate, decide, and act based on information, data, and trends.
